What do Sessions Look Like?

We advocate a classic academic routine with emphasis on logic and mental math. Since paper-and-pencil calculation demands careful attention to numbers and bookkeeping rules, students usually do written computation mechanically with very little sense of what they are actually doing. Mental computation forces students to think about how numbers relate, and incorporate basic arithmetic properties; we avoid calculators whenever possible.

Each session includes homework discussion along with a review of previous material. In harmony with the classic academic approach, the introduction of a new topic is given in lecture form with questions welcomed. Then we discuss sample problems, both by brainstorming and by individual student-teacher interaction, followed by class work on the new material. Finally, homework is assigned with comments and hints.

We have high expectations for student performance and active student participation.  So come prepared to engage!

How Do Class Assignments Happen?

Classic Math School is intended for children ages 6 - 17 (K - 12th grades). The usual class size is 8 to 10 students, which allows for individualized instruction and attention. We use an interactive Placement Test to determine each student’s math level. Students are therefore placed into classes according to their skills, not their grade level. Each class has two-hour sessions once a week. The duration of all courses is two semesters, 15 weeks each; students who want to continue their education at the school will be placed in the next class according to their achievements.

How to Become a Student?

We accept online applications all year long. All new students are required to take a placement test. In addition to the test, every student is interviewed by a teacher for a more accurate assessment. The test results are discussed with the parents along with placement recommendations.

The placement test is designed for meticulous assessment of students’ math skills, so students of similar math backgrounds placed into the same class.

Generally we enroll on a “first come, first serve” basis, however, returning students have priority. Spaces are limited; if no spaces in the appropriate classes remain, students will be placed on a waiting list.
